Research

Paul Clarke is an architect based in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Ulster in Belfast where he is a member of the Research Institute of Art and Design  – RIAD. He is Course Director for the MArch programme and runs the 6th year studio. This research project builds on his continuing interest in drawing and representation in architecture. The research into the usage and history of the architect’s sketchbook has developed from both his teaching and presentations at conferences on the unique nature of the sketchbook in the digital age. He has lectured widely on this and is part of a network of academics that are interested in the value and role of sketchbooks in design teaching.

The Secret Laboratory is a multi-media based research exploration that aims to open up and explore the creative process of architecture through an investigation of the device of the individual sketchbook and drawing.
